What Is Superintelligence?

It is a speculative concept. It is also not a fringe one: it is discussed seriously by researchers who disagree sharply about its likelihood, its timeline and whether the framing is useful at all.

Why capability alone is not the worry

A very capable system is not automatically dangerous. The concern is the combination of capability with goals that were specified imperfectly, which is the normal condition of every specification ever written.

This is the alignment problem in its least dramatic form. It is not about a machine turning against us. It is about the gap between what we asked for and what we meant, evaluated by something that does not share our unstated assumptions.

The oversight mismatch

Human oversight assumes three things: that we can observe what the system is doing, understand why, and intervene in time. Each assumption weakens as capability rises, and they weaken together.

This is why so much serious work focuses on interpretability and on keeping systems corrigible. The goal is not to constrain capability but to preserve the conditions under which supervision remains meaningful.

What remains genuinely unsettled

Whether current methods scale to this level is unresolved. Whether intelligence of this kind is a single quantity that can be exceeded is disputed. Whether the risk framing crowds out nearer harms is a live and legitimate argument.

Any page on this subject that presents the outcome as settled is misrepresenting the state of knowledge, in either direction.

Why the idea belongs in fiction

Fiction can hold an unresolved question without needing to resolve it, which is exactly the right posture here. It can also do something argument cannot: show what deference feels like from the inside.
